Smith’s Teams with American Red Cross

Smith’s Food & Drug Stores is offering customers a convenient way to assist the American Red Cross in its international relief response to the earthquake in Japan and tsunami throughout the Pacific.

Now through March 26, 2011, customers may make a donation of any amount to the American Red Cross by simply adding that amount to their checkout purchase. All funds collected will directly benefit American Red Cross international relief efforts in partnership with the Japanese Red Cross, the agency responding with help of food, water, shelter, medical supplies and other assistance.

“Smith’s feels a great commitment to the American Red Cross, a trusted organization made up of thousands of dedicated volunteers, who respond immediately to emergency needs whether in our own backyard or abroad,” said Marsha Gilford, Smith’s vice president public affairs.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and counsels victims of disasters; teaches lifesaving skills; supplies blood to area hospitals; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its humanitarian mission.

VALLEY VIEW NURSE SHAVES HEAD, DONATES HAIR FOR CANCER FUNDRAISER, AWARENESS

FT. MOHAVE – When Susan King became a medical professional more than 30 years ago she knew that she wanted to care for people.  Now King, a registered nurse for the past 23 years, has taken her care to the next level.  With a hospital lobby full of supporters and onlookers at Valley View Medical Center, King shaved her head to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s local Relay For Life fundraiser.  At the same time, King is donating her hair to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for those undergoing cancer treatment.

“When I first attended last year’s Relay I thought there might be 200 people — instead there were thousands from throughout the Tri-State and beyond,” King told a crowd of well-wishers at Valley View, where she is a nursing supervisor.  “It was absolutely amazing.  I’m invested in this community and I want to be involved in it.”

Following a tradition started on the ABC newscast Good Morning America, King told her story between shears in three words: “Relay … For … Life.”  The Relay For Life walk for the Bullhead City AZ / Laughlin NV / Needles CA area will be held May 6 – 7 at Mohave High School in Bullhead City.

“Kids in the Kitchen” host a terrific turnout!

Laughlin, Nev. — A new and innovative youth development program showing kids the value of food, its preparation and nutrition is being developed by the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Colorado River. It’s called “Kids in the Kitchen,” and has become a fun way to let club kids prepare a meal (and dessert) for the organization’s board of directors, community business leaders and staff – the “chefs” also clean up and sanitize the kitchen afterward. On Tuesday, December 28th, over a dozen people attended the luncheon, hosted this quarter by the Laughlin unit at the Spirit Mountain Activity Center as part of the activities schedule during “Winterfest for Kids.”

“It’s a way for us to give back and thank the people in the community who have given to our clubs – so we have representation from some of the casinos here – and it’s also a learning experience for the children,” BGCCR Chief Volunteer President of the Board of Directors Stacey Swartzman said. “They are preparing food and serving adults and it’s just a good experience for them. It also teaches the kids to talk to adults without being scared…And what we do as children becomes a stepping stone to what we do as adults.”

Swartzman and the other invited guests were served with a buffet-style array of chicken and ham salad sandwiches, fresh fruit and vegetable appetizers, spinach-artichoke dip and ambrosia salad; dessert consisting of fresh baked brownies, cookies and lemon bars; along with a ginger ale/sherbet punch topped with fresh orange slices and maraschino cherries.

For more information on any of the programs offered at any of the three clubs in Bullhead City, Laughlin or Fort Mohave, please call the BGCCR administrative offices at (928) 763-1411.

Disc Golf Course Open for League Play

The City of Bullhead City Parks & Recreation Department has recently opened the new Riverview Disc Golf Course at Rotary Park.  The course is located at the north beach area of Rotary Park, just west of Balboa Drive.

Nestled along the Colorado River, the nine-hole, 3022’, par 27 course has some of the most beautiful holes in the southwest.  Course designer, Robert Pine, has created three levels of tee and pin placements that offer a challenge to the most experienced disc golf veterans, but are welcoming to any newcomer.

“We are exceptionally proud to offer this exciting new amenity at Rotary Park,” said Recreation Manager Dave Heath.  “Disc golf is a hugely popular and growing sport throughout the country.  We’ve definitely been blown away by the number of participants we’ve already seen on the course.”

According to Heath, league play is now open for all experience levels on Wednesday afternoons.  Golfers merely need to show up between 4:00 and 4:30 to get involved in the league.  Those who are new to the sport are encouraged to attend.  Heath also stated that the Recreation Division has six sets of loaner discs that participants may check out at City Hall, 2355 Trane Road.  There is no charge to check out discs or participate in the league.

“We’re expecting to see this sport grow in popularity over the next few months,” Heath said.  “We’ll be offering tournaments, setting aside times for kids to play, and possibly expanding to more league days in the next year.”

Scorecards, a course map, directions to the course, course records, and weather conditions can be found on the course website at www.mohavediscgolf.com/riverview.  Scorecards are also available in the lobby of Bullhead City Hall.
