Bullhead City, Ariz. – Recently, two projects were undertaken by Torch Club members from the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Colorado River, under the direction of a trio of Mohave Master Gardeners. The Torch Club is comprised of kids ages 11 – 18, who attend the clubs in Bullhead City, Laughlin and Fort Mohave.
For the first project, salt cedar shoots were removed from the trail behind the Bullhead Unit of the Boys & Girls Club, located at 2250 Highland Rd., between Hancock Rd. and Marina Blvd.
“Salt cedar is also known as Tamarisk, an invasive water thirsty tree from Africa, which was suffocating the Arizona native trees,” Master Gardener Nancy Samp said. “Those native to the area include Palo Verde and Mesquite along with the Texas Sage planted on the hiking trail by the city a few years ago.”
Samp added that with the permission of Bullhead City Parks and Recreation Director Karla Brady and BGCCR Executive Director Teri Tomlinson, “the children were instructed by three master gardeners to remove and dispose of the salt cedar shoots behind the club.”
Samp explained that additionally, gardening teams planted amaryllis and narcissus bulbs in the club’s greenhouse, “which will bloom just in time for the Christmas holidays. We had a perfect day for our projects, no wind and no heat.”
Assisting during both projects were Master Gardeners Leroy Jackson and Linda Rohner.
